Step 1: Monitoring - Explain the role of monitoring in weight management and teach participants how to keep a Food and Activity Record.
Step 2: Physical Activity - Help participants make a plan for increasing their physical activity levels.
Step 3: Guide to Daily Food Choices - Help participants develop a plan for getting the recommended number of servings from the Food Groups within the MyPlate Food Guidance System
Step 4: Serving Size - Demonstrate how to weigh and measure foods so participants can develop an eye for standard serving sizes.
Step 5: The Calorie Connection - Lead discussion of where calories fit in the weight management picture and help participants identify ways they can cut calories.
Step 6: Putting It All Together - Assist participants in determining changes they can make in their eating and physical activity behaviors to achieve their goals in a healthful way. Introduce pedometer activity to interested participants.
Step 7: Mid-Program Interview - Conduct a one-on-one interview based on motivational interviewing principles to evaluate participant progress and provide feedback on progress.
Step 8: Eating Styles - Help participants identify eating styles that lead to overeating. A discussion of hunger and satiety is included.
Step 9: Managing Lapses - Dealing with Your Environment - Help participants see how the availability and visibility of food affects intake and provide strategies for reducing environmental cues.
Step 10: Managing Lapses - Dealing with Social Events - Help participants identify personal high-risk social situations and develop strategies for managing them.
Step 11: Managing Lapses - Dealing with Feelings - Help participants identify how feelings affect their eating behavior and assist them in developing a plan.
Step 12: Managing Lapses - Dealing with Other People - Help participants develop a strategy for dealing with people who overly or unconsciously encourage eating and idenitfy steps participants can take to solicit support.
Step 13: Managing Lapses - Eating Out - Help participants make a plan to apply LIFESTEPS principles when eating away from home.
Step 14: Staying Active - Help participants develop a physical activity program for maintaining weight losses and developing cardiovascular fitness.
Step 15: Final Interview - Conduct a one-on-one interview to evaluate participant's LIFESTEPS experience, provide feedback and set goals for the future
Step 16: Staying in Step - Help participants develop a plan for maintaining behavior changes established during the program and working on new goals.
