Skill Development and Leader Training

LIFESTEPS® Leader Training is required to maintain program quality and provide client accountability. The leader training is designed to train registered dietitians and other health professionals to teach the LIFESTEPS Weight Management Program. Upon successful completion of the training, the individual will be able to:

  • Identify all components of the LIFESTEPS Weight Management Program and know how to use each component effectively.
  • Apply cognitive-behavioral strategies and group facilitation skills in a weight management setting.
  • Understand when and how to provide behavioral feedback to clients.
  • Apply goal setting concepts to specific client situations.
  • Function as an independent contractor of the LIFESTEPS Weight Management Program.
  • Market the program.


LIFESTEPS is a Continuing Professional Education Accredited Provider through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Internet Based Course – This self-paced 5 week online course is offered three times a year (February, June, September) through Central Arizona College and provides 1 college credit or 15 CPE’s through the American Dietetic Association. This course can be completed from the comfort of your home office without the need for costly travel.

It fits your schedule because there are no set times to “attend”. You choose your own times to work on the course. The course contains individual learning modules that include required reading, power point presentations and assignments. Discussion boards are included to allow interaction among students on key topics.

Statistics from the online course:

For 63% of the students it was their first online course. At completion, 84% said they felt comfortable taking the course.

81% said the course met their expectations.

100% of the students said they:

  • Understood the philosophy behind the LIFESTEPS Program.
  • Understood the role of behavior modification in weight management.
  • Could apply behavioral techniques to specific situations.
  • Knew how to give behavioral feedback.
  • Understood the role of a facilitator.
  • Felt prepared to teach the LIFESTEPS Program.

On-Site Training – A leader training workshop at your facility is available for groups of 10 or more individuals. The workshop content parallels the learning modules in the internet based course. All the required reading must be done in advance. A pre and post-test will be given. This workshop provides 15 CPE’s through the American Dietetic Association.
