The Partnership for Healthy Weight Management (PHWM), a consortium of health professionals from the scientific, government, and business communities has developed program guidelines that consumers can use in  evaluating a program and program providers can use when developing and marketing a program. What’s involved in following the program?
A sensible program encourages:
Following advice from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Moderate weight losses of 1-2# per week
Inclusion of daily physical activity
Health care provider consent for meal plans of less than 1500 Calories

Dietary recommendations are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid with a recommended calorie intake of 1400 or higher
Daily physical activity recommended and based on American College of Sports Medicine and USDA guidelines
Moderate weight losses of 1-2# per week
Medical release required for clients with specific health problems and/or physical limitations
What are the staff qualifications?

Does the staff have appropriate

training, experience and credentials?

Is the program on an individual or group basis?
All LIFESTEPS Leaders have a health care background and must have a minimum of one college level course in nutrition. Most leaders are registered dietitians. In addition, individuals must successfully complete a leader training course that provides skill development in cognitive-behavioral strategies, delivery of behavioral feedback, group facilitation and a detailed look at the LIFESTEPS program session by session.
What are the risks of using the product or service?
Does the program require drastic food restriction or utilize prescription or over-the-counter weight loss drugs or other products?
LIFESTEPS encourages moderate calorie restriction and normalized eating during the weight loss process. No drugs or other products are used or endorsed by LIFESTEPS.

Originally developed in the mid-80’s, LIFESTEPS has been used by health professionals nationwide for more than 20 years. Regularly revised, most recently in 2005, LIFESTEPS continues to assist health professionals in facilitating patient change through the use of science-based cognitive-behavioral strategies.
