Background
The LIFESTEPS® Weight Management Program was originally developed by National Dairy Council® in the mid-80’s by a team with expertise in nutrition, behavior therapy and curriculum development. LIFESTEPS, Inc. is now an independent non-profit entity and has undergone regular revision under the direction of registered dietitians (RD’s) and reviewed by experts in nutrition, behavior modification, relapse prevention, fitness, and curriculum development. Revisions have:
- Insured inclusion of current concepts in nutrition, fitness, and behavioral and cognitive treatment strategies; and
- Added new features to the program.
Revision Timeline
- 1993 –Daily Food Guide Pyramid graphics and recommendations added.
- 1998 – Content changes that:
- Increased the emphasis on relapse prevention,
- Focused the program on weight “management” as more client empowering than weight “control,”
- Developed session guidelines emphasizing client choices or options.
- 2002 – Optional pedometer activity added with guidelines for the leader and worksheets for the participant.
- 2006 - MyPyramid graphics and recommendations added.
- 2007 – New program “trigger” videos developed.
